Cat urine can create an unpleasant smell in plastic litter boxes because the plastic scratches over time, creating pores where bacteria and odor-causing residue can build up and are difficult to remove. The ammonia in urine breaks down and its odor is absorbed into the plastic, leading to a strong smell even after cleaning.
Restaurant supply stores have stainless steel serving trays and chafers for much less than a dedicated litter box. They work just fine. A mound of litter in the middle of the box is just fine for my two cats. No problems in over three years. Adjust the amount according to your cat’s size.
I have one of these and 2 plastic ones. My cat prefers this one. Rarely uses the plastic one and never uses the plastic one with lid.
