Cat urine can create an unpleasant smell in plastic litter boxes because the plastic scratches over time, creating pores where bacteria and odor-causing residue can build up and are difficult to remove. The ammonia in urine breaks down and its odor is absorbed into the plastic, leading to a strong smell even after cleaning.

  2. Restaurant supply stores have stainless steel serving trays and chafers for much less than a dedicated litter box. They work just fine. A mound of litter in the middle of the box is just fine for my two cats. No problems in over three years. Adjust the amount according to your cat’s size.

  3. I have one of these and 2 plastic ones. My cat prefers this one. Rarely uses the plastic one and never uses the plastic one with lid.
